Tipping points in Antarctica

As Antarctica’s mass loss increases, the threat of crossing tipping points both in the ice sheet and the surrounding Southern Ocean is increasing. These tipping points are central to the research agenda of TiPACCs. But what actually is a tipping point? Have tipping points already been crossed in the past? And what might the future hold? Dave Chandler and Ronja Reese, both Postdocs within TiPACCs, give answers to these questions in…

New TiPACCs publication on Antarctica’s long-term stability and tipping points

The hysteresis of the Antarctic Ice Sheet More than half of Earth’s freshwater resources are held frozen in the Antarctic Ice Sheet, making the ice sheet the single largest potential source for global sea-level rise under future warming. At the same time, its future evolution will be determined by the interplay of several strong feedbacks between the ice and its environment, implying threshold behavior and the existence of tipping points…

New TiPACCs publication!

Early Warning from Space for a Few Key Tipping Points in Physical, Biological, and Social-Ecological Systems In this paper, the latest results concerning a few key tipping elements of the Earth system in the ocean, cryosphere and land realms are reviewed. The Antarctic ice sheet is one of the tipping elements described in more detail. Indeed, recent progress in ice sheet modelling tends to confirm that the Pine Island and…
